The best way to explore the island is to follow the marked trails that take you on a botanical and historical tour of the site.

You will stroll by the Batéguier pond with its numerous species of migratory birds to the Point de la Convention to find unique plant species.

Continue on to the Fort Royal, the former residence of the Man in the Iron Mask. The Maritime Museum is not to be missed; sheltered within a fortified enclosure, it offers visitors an insight into the area’s history.

To discover on Sainte Marguerite Island

The iron mask and royal fort museum

Discover the famous prison where the Man in the Iron Mask was held captive during the time of Louis XIV. The painter Jean Le Gac suggests a cell by cell route evoking the memory of places and men.

In Roman cisterns, the museum presents archaeological finds from the area. Excavations of the island and the sea in the surrounding areas have bestowed relics of 1st century murals, remains of the contents of a roman shipwreck from 1BC and those of a Saracen wreck from the 10th century to the museum. The Maritime Museum (Musée de la Mer) will be closed on Mondays and on December 24th, 25th, 31st 2013 & January 1st 2014.

Open everyday excepted mondays.

Cannes’s underwater eco-museum

submersion of sculptures by artist jason decaires taylor: cannes’ underwater eco-museum drops anchor just off the island of sainte-marguerite

The big day has arrived! On Thursday 28 January 2021, the sculptures of the Cannes underwater eco-museum, created by the famous British international artist Jason deCaires Taylor, a great fan of the city, took their place a few dozen metres from the shore of the island of Sainte-Marguerite. The six Cannes residents who let the artist use their features were present for the submersion taking place today in Cannes, at the initiative of its mayor David Lisnard, the first underwater eco-museum in France and the Mediterranean by this renowned sculptor.

Made from an ecological material, the statues will encourage the return of underwater flora and fauna that will gradually repopulate the area around the works, set aside for safe swimming and now greatly enlarged.
